Synopsis

My Master Doesn't Bite! follows a maid named Lucy who is chooses to work in a remote, disheveled mansion owned by a half-human half-dragon named Skar. After being tempted by the high salary, Lucy does everything she can to prove that she is the optimal person for the job. Despite Skar's initial hesitance, he is soon taken by Lucy's determination and allows her to stay, provided that the relationship remains strictly professional. But can Lucy manage the outbursts and intricacies that come with serving a half-dragon? And will this employer and employee manage to keep things platonic, or is their relationship destined to evolve into something more?

Review

As a romantasy lover, this series is definitely up my alley. From the get-go the reader is captured by Lucy's pure grit and over-the-top charm, and despite Skar's grumpiness, the two of them have great chemistry. Lucy may primarily be motivated by her job's high salary, but she has genuine care for Skar that is both sweet and refreshing to see. Skar's tsundere attitude also isn't too overbearing, nor does it come off like an overplayed cat and mouse game. Instead, it feels natural considering his past traumas, and you can clearly see how Lucy's presence is influencing him to open up more.

The general tone is also handled very well. Though the story comes off as a romantic comedy, there are multiple serious moments sprinkled in. Lucy and Skar both have their fair share of traumas, but they handle it in opposite ways, with Skar becoming more secluded and introverted and Lucy projecting an air of optimism. While some subjects are heavy, I appreciate how comic relief is often used in a way that doesn’t take away from the seriousness of the moment.

The romantic aspect of the story is very fun, and there are plenty of heart throbbing moments. I personally find Skar’s blushing face cute and endearing, and I’m so glad we get to see it often and earlier than I was anticipating. The premise of their working relationship hinges on Skar believing that Lucy is single, which sets the stage for an exciting moment in the future when the truth is revealed. They both also have had issues in the past with workplace relationships, which reinforces the strict employer/employee boundary and the possibility for yearning and mutual pining down the road.

My Master Doesn't Bite! releases every Thursday with a break every five episodes. The first three episodes are free to read and the rest cost 60 gems to unlock. Overall, the story is fun and has a lot of visual comedy amidst the romantic aspects. The serious moments do a great job at deepening the characters, but it isn’t so serious that it becomes depressing. It’s definitely worth the gems so give it a read if you can!
